Soundwell Swimming Club coach Janet Hanney has retired after teaching thousands of children to swim over the past 34 years.
At her last ever coaching session at Kingswood Leisure Centre tonight, a special presentation was made by club chairman Julian Lewis to the 73-year-old volunteer.
He dubbed her “The Queen of Soundwell Swimming Club”, adding: “We can never repay our gratitude.”
She received a huge round of applause from everyone in and around the pool as she was presented with gifts to thank her for her dedication to the club.
Janet, who lives in Oldland Common with her husband David, used to teach four sessions a week but for the last decade or so has concentrated on Friday night sessions.
She got involved with Soundwell as her children Jo and Martin swam for the club, and Jo is still a coach. Among the youngsters Janet has taught have been her grandchildren, Ryan, Lewis, Lara and Hetty.
Julian Lewis said: “With great regret Janet is hanging up the towel and retiring.
“Janet has taught thousands of children to swim she is one of life’s beautiful people and we will all miss her smile around the poolside.”
Janet told The Week In: “I’ve loved every minute of it. I wish the club all the best for the future.”
