Bridge safety fears close mile-long lane of the Ring Road

A mile-long section of one lane of the A4174 Ring Road is closed from today because of safety concerns about the Avon Valley Bridge, close to the Hicks Gate roundabout.

South Gloucestershire Council is putting the closure in place because the movement joint at the north end of the bridge has partially broken up.

The closure of lane 1 southbound (the inside lane) starts just south of the Kingsfield roundabout by Aspects Leisure Centre and extends beyond the bridge over the River Avon on the South Gloucestershire/Bath and North East Somerset border.

The council says it will not be able to replace the joint until after the New Year period so for safety reasons the lane will be closed to prevent vehicles from running over the joint.

Once a proper investigation of the bridge can be carried out, arrangements will be made to install a replacement joint.
