The former Downend School pupil Sajid Javid MP has today been appointed by David Cameron as the new Culture Secretary following this morning’s resignation of Maria Miller in the wake of her expenses row.

Mr Javid, 44, who had been Financial Secretary to the Treasury, is the Conservative MP for Bromsgrove.

His late father was a Bristol bus driver and he is a frequent visitor to South Gloucestershire as his mother lives in Emersons Green.

Mr Javid became the youngest vice president ever of Chase Manhattan Bank at 24 before moving to Deutsche Bank, where he was a board member.
