Father Christmas boards the steam train at Bitton today for the first of the Santa Specials

The annual Santa Specials at Avon Valley Railway got under way today.

Every weekend between now and Christmas, and also on Monday, 23rd December and Christmas Eve, Father Christmas will join families on the steam train at Bitton for the six-mile round trip.

Last Christmas an estimated 10,000 visitors enjoyed the Santa Specials in which Father Christmas makes his way along the train, stopping to talk to all the children and giving them each a present. Parents receive a mince pie or festive biscuit.

The trip takes about an hour, during which time passengers enjoy the views of the Avon Valley from the old-fashioned carriages and experience the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age.

Up to six trips depart throughout the day. Tickets are priced from £9 and advance booking is essential. Visit www.avonvalleyrailway.org
