A bid to get a preservation order put on the tree in Park Road in Keynsham that was facing the chop has failed.
The mature sycamore, which had electricity wires running close to some branches, was duly chopped down at the weekend
After hearing about the plans to fell the tree outside the BUPA Dental Care practice, some local residents contacted B&NES Council to try to save it.
A senior tree officer from the council assessed it last week but was unable to recommend a Tree Preservation Order. She said that although it was a “significant” tree, it had undergone at least three phases of crown reductions, including pollarding, to contain the size in view of overhead wires.
The tree was also confined within a raised planting bed and root growth was already affecting a retaining wall.
