Farewell party to mark the end of a Fishponds institution

st matthiasA big weekend party is being planned to mark the closure of the St Matthias Campus in Fishponds after 161 years.

‘St Matts’ is currently the humanities campus for the University of the West of England (UWE) and was previously a teacher training college, originally called the Gloucester and Bristol Diocesan Training Institution for School Mistresses, which opened in 1853.

UWE is closing the campus as a part of a relocation project to its Frenchay campus.

As we’ve previously reported, the Fishponds site will be redeveloped by Barratt for housing and will also be home from September to the new Steiner Academy Bristol.

Open to everyone, the free party will run from Friday 30th May to Sunday 1st June. Events will include live music, a barbecue and hog roast, campus tours and the chance for people to chat about their memories.

There will also be a charity auction raising money for the St Matt’s Bursaries. The plan is to ensure that students studying the humanities subjects which have been taught at St Matts can continue to do so at UWE, regardless of their financial background or circumstances.
