Christmas storms cause chaos in our area

flood alertThe stormy weather has caused chaos in our area today and the Environment Agency has issued flood alerts on local rivers.

Power cables have been brought down in the gale force winds, roads have been flooded and bus and rail services disrupted.

There was a report that one bus travelling on the A431 between Bath and Bitton was “totally flooded downstairs”. Drivers described the road as “just passable”.

And tonight two lanes were closed on the A4 Bath Road at  the Hicks Gate roundabout because of flooding.

There have also been reports of power lines down in Hanham Road in Kingswood, in Abbots Road in Hanham and at Abson Road in Pucklechurch.

First Great Western announced severe disruption to train services this afternoon.
First Bus also said the weather was causing “considerable delays”.

The Environment Agency said river levels on the River Avon at Saltford, River Boyd at Wick and Brislington Brook at Brislington were rising.

And there was a flood alert tonight on the River Chew from Chew Stoke to Keynsham.

Drivers are being warned to take extra care. Although Christmas Day should be calmer, more storms are forecast for the end of the week.
