A former Hanham High pupil was today chosen by the Labour Party to try to win back Kingswood at the next General Election.
At the final hustings today, artist Jo McCarron beat two other candidates – Rowena Hayward, from Willsbridge, who works at the GMB union, and Lisa Homan, a Hammersmith & Fulham councillor.
Jo McCarron, who lives near Bath, had hoped earlier this year to become Labour’s candidate for North East Somerset but was beaten by lecturer and lawyer Todd Foreman.
She decided to stand in Kingswood after Labour’s original candidate to take on Conservative Chris Skidmore in 2015, Josie Channer, stood down in the autumn after it emerged that she owed more than £2,000 in parking fines and late payment fees in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, where she was a councillor on a committee overseeing parking issues.
Jo McCarron tweeted this afternoon: “Very excited to be selected as Parliamentary candidate for Kingswood! Can’t wait to start.”
