The Downend Tavern on Downend Road has announced it is closing.
The announcement was made on Facebook this week by Irene who runs the pub.
She said: “It is with a very sad and heavy heart that I write this post. Due to the present climate and situation that we are all in, the Downend Tavern will finally close its doors and cease trading on Sunday 1st November.”
Until then opening hours are Friday 2pm to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday noon to 10pm.
She continued: “I would like to thank all our patrons for their loyalty and love they have shown towards me and my staff.
“Please feel free to come in and drink all my beer and clear my cellar as you do each and every week!) and I’m sure as the Downend draws its final breath, we will toast the health, wealth and friendship of all that have entered.”
Dozens of people have responded with dismay to the announcement, including the chairman of Mangotsfield Residents’ Association, Clive Heath, who is also a local pastor. He said: “A real shame and so sad to hear it, a great and welcoming place and music venue lost.”
Another person commented: “Another proper community pub going, the death of a great tradition.”
