South Gloucestershire’s first throughabout now open

South Gloucestershire’s first throughabout is now open on the A4174 Avon Ring Road at Warmley.

The 26 traffic lights on the approaches and at the junction were switched on and the  traffic cones removed early today, allowing motorists to drive on the three lanes through the middle.

The £6.9m project to convert the Wraxall Road roundabout into a fully signal controlled throughabout aims to reduce congestion and increase traffic flow at the busy junction.

Work started on it in summer 2020 and the council says it has been completed within budget.

Road users are reminded of the new road layout. If heading towards Mount Hill from Emersons Green direction, you need to use the left lane to turn right. If you’re heading towards Cadbury Heath from the Keynsham direction, you need the left lane to turn right.

Traffic seemed to be flowing well on the Ring Road through the junction this morning although some drivers  appeared confused about which lane to be in and there was a long queue of traffic coming down from the Kingswood direction to join the throughabout, with vehicles backed up to beyond the Remembrance Park.

There will be great interest in how the throughabout works out as the council is planning changes to five more Ring Road roundabouts between Lyde Green and Longwell Green, including more throughabouts at the Siston Hill, Deanery Road and Kingsfield junctions.
