A Honda motorcycle stolen from Westgate Buildings in Bath on Tuesday was recovered later that day in Kingswood but the man pushing it escaped police efforts to catch him.
Officers responded to a report of an altercation in Regent Street in Kingswood at about 8pm on Tuesday. A witness said a member of the public had challenged two people on a motorbike which was being ridden on the pavement.
Police searched the area and saw a man pushing a motorbike along Grimsbury Road. He fled on foot into neighbouring gardens and despite a search by officers on the ground, supported by the National Police Air Service helicopter, he was not traced.
The blue and white Honda CRF was identified as the motorbike stolen from Bath.
Police say enquiries continue and anyone with information which could help, especially dashcam or CCTV, is asked to call 101 and give the reference 5223216023 for the motorbike theft in Bath, or 5223215719 for the incident in Kingswood.
