South Glos bin strike over

South Gloucestershire Council has been told that members of the Unite union have accepted the latest pay offer made by waste contractor Suez.

With the offer being recommended by the union, industrial action was suspended from Monday while members were balloted.

With the offer being accepted, the industrial action is now over and collections will continue to resume as normal, the council has announced tonight.

Around 150 members of Unite have been in dispute with their employer over pay levels. Bin loaders earn £11.53 per hour and said they had not had a wage rise in line with inflation for 21 years.

They took strike action from 12th June until 18th June and there was a second phase initially scheduled to run from 26th June to Sunday 9th July, but a couple of days into that strike it was announced that it would be extended to last every day until 3rd September unless a settlement was reached.
