The branch will close in July
The Halifax branch at Emersons Green Retail Park is to close this summer, it has been announced.
That will leave both Downend and Emersons Green without a bank. As we reported last December, HSBC, Downend’s last remaining bank, is due to close on 25th April.
Halifax chiefs say that following an in-depth review, their branch at Emersons Green Retail Park will close on 19th July. The review found that customers are already banking in other ways, including 88% using other Halifax branches, online banking or telephone banking, while 22% have also used the Post Office.
Customers are advised that the nearest Halifax branch is at Kings Chase Shopping Centre in Kingswood, 3.28 miles away. Halifax admit that although there are direct buses to Kingswood, they are “irregular” and the journey takes around 30 minutes.
Alternatively customers can go to the Yate branch which is more than five miles away: “There are indirect buses requiring a change and some walking, with journey times of between 40 and 60 minutes.”
Customers are advised that the nearest Post Office branch is at Northcote Road in Mangotsfield which is almost two miles away. Customers are also advised that there are cash machines at Boots and Sainsbury’s at the retail park in Emersons Green.

The HSBC closes later this month
There is a Post Office branch in Downend at McColl’s with a cashpoint, as well as a cashpoint at Sainsbury’s. There is also a local agency for Yorkshire Building Society.
