Bomb squad called to Saltford after ‘mortar’ found in river

The bomb squad was called out to Saltford today after a suspected wartime mortar was discovered in the river.

The area around the bridge carrying the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, next to the Bird in Hand pub, was cordoned off while investigations were carried out.

Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said: “We were called to the river by the Bristol and Bath Railway Path in Saltford at around 10.40am following reports of a suspected mortar being pulled from the river.

“Officers initially attended the scene and a cordon was put in place. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team later arrived and established it was a false alarm with good intent.”
