People got into the Christmas spirit in Downend tonight.

Shops and businesses stayed open late and Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council organised an evening of events which began with Santa arriving at his grotto to give gifts to children who queued to see him.

Bromley Bear switched on the Christmas tree lights and there was singing by children from Christ Church Infants, Bromley Heath Infants and St Augustine’s Primary School, as well as the Cleeve Singers.

Downend School Concert Band played and there was entertainment from the Red X Dancers.

Two charities are being supported this year by the parish council – the Milestones Trust, which support 1,000 people in the Bristol area with learning disabilities, mental health needs and dementia, and the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.

Both had stalls at the event.
