The man was pulled to safety by a member of the public before the fire crews arrived and they praised him for his bravery.
It was the second house blaze in the area in two days – on Tuesday a man’s body was found in his burnt-out home in Ridgeway Road and a woman living next door was rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
Crews from Speedwell, Temple and Southmead fire stations were sent to yesterday’s fire after a number of 999 calls were received from members of the public. The fire had taken hold of the ground floor of the two storey semi-detached property and thick smoke was filling much of the rest of the house.
Two people who were in the house at the time had managed to escape before crews arrived. A young woman had jumped from a first-floor window, while a man was pulled to safety by a passer-by who saw the man was still inside the porch so pulled him to safety through a broken window.
Both occupants were treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital.
Four firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the house to extinguish the fire and check there was no one else inside.
The cause is being investigated but it is not thought to be suspicious.
