Costa breaches planning regulations to catch a few rays

Tables and chairs outside Costa Coffee in Keynsham this week

The sudden outbreak of summer weather appears to have prompted Costa Coffee to proceed with plans to put tables on the pavement outside its Keynsham High Street cafe even though a decision on planning permission had yet to be made. As we have reported in earlier editions, an application submitted for three tables and six chairs had been met with sizeable objection from the Town Council. Civic Society and a number of residents.  Last month, agents acting for Costa Coffee came back with revised plans for just two tables and four chairs located on the zebra crossing side of the cafe entrance.  While this satisfied B&NES Highways officers, who had previously objected to the table on the other side, previous objectors largely maintained their original stance.

On Monday, tables and chairs appeared outside the cafe, although the positioning of one either side of the entrance was actually contrary to its own revised proposal. B&NES Council advised agents acting for Costa that it was in breach of planning regulations on Wednesday.  It is understood that the application itself will be heard by B&NES Development Control Committee meeting in July.
