When Sainsbury’s launched a nationwide competition on its internal website to win a giant Easter egg, they asked staff asked to tell them their personal stories of triumph of happiness. Ann Wilde, one of the check out team at the Emersons Green store decided to tell them what she had done to make a difference since the death of her son. When Michael sadly died seven years ago, Ann not only dealt with the grief but also volunteered to donate his organs. At the time, nobody at the hospital had actually asked Ann the delicate question but because of her intervention, other lives were saved. Since then, she has given talks to staff at Frenchay, Southmead and Bath Royal United hospitals of her experiences as a parent and stressing the importance for medical staff to confront the situation. “I advise them how important it is to families to be given the chance to get something practical out of a terrible situation” said Anne.
