The AF&RS Control Room received more than 20 calls to reports of the fire in Russell Town Avenue yesterday, with smoke and flames seen for some distance.
When crews arrived they found a fire on private land used to store vehicles, wood and other materials. At the height of the fire 35 firefighters were on scene using the turntable ladder to get water on to the flames from above. Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used four jets to extinguish the fire.
Two people were evacuated from their nearby homes as a precaution due to the smoke plume but were allowed to return shortly afterwards.
Crews remained on the scene for some time overnight to ensure the fire was fully out.
